Potts Point is famous for its vibrant nightlife, especially the neon-lit clubs and bars of Kings Cross. By day, the area buzzes with a lively café culture, with locals flocking to Macleay Street for bistro brunches and unique fashion finds. A stroll down both Orwell Street and Macleay Street reveals Potts Point’s dynamic dining scene. On Sundays, Kings Cross Market draws visitors with craft vendors and food stalls. Nearby, Llankelly Place has evolved into a foodie haven, offering an exciting range of multicultural eateries, while Victoria Street is lined with backpacker pubs tucked amid charming terraced houses.
Historically significant, Potts Point was Australia’s first deliberately designed suburb. The area was named after Joseph Hyde Potts, an accountant and the first teller at the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac). Potts purchased six-and-a-half acres of harborside land in a region once known as Woolloomooloo Hill, renaming it Potts Point.
A prominent local landmark is Elizabeth Bay House, built by Alexander Macleay, after whom Macleay Street is named. Potts Point’s allure is also enhanced by its ideal location. Offering a tranquil residential atmosphere, it’s just a short walk or quick train ride from some of Sydney's most iconic landmarks. The lush Royal Botanic Gardens, the architectural splendour of the Sydney Opera House, and sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge are all within easy reach, making Potts Point a fashionable and desirable place to live and visit.

The Cadigal (or Gadigal) clan, part of the larger Eora Nation, were the traditional owners of the land encompassing Potts Point. Their territory stretched from the southern side of Port Jackson to what is now known as Petersham. The area covering the 2011 postcode was traditionally referred to by locals as Curageen (or Carraginn) and Yarrandabbi.
The Gadigal people are the traditional custodians of the Potts Point area, which was originally known as Derawun.
