The name "Paddington" originated when James Underwood subdivided 50 acres of the 100-acre parcel granted to him, Robert Cooper, and Francis Forbes in October 1839. Initially intended for the establishment of a distillery, Underwood named his subdivision the Paddington Estate, after the London Borough of Paddington. The estate spanned from Oxford Street down to what is now Paddington Street.
